The first church of the Acadiens and a beautiful place to celebrate mass. If you come to St., Martinville, you would cheat yourself by not stopping in viewing this beautiful place.
The oldest church in Lafayette, and it sure feels like when you're inside. The Marian grotto is a must see by itself with the early 20th century stones. The church architecture is beautifully designed and maintained.
Beautiful old church. There is a sense of awe in the beauty and antiquity of this church. It is wonderful to have the Latin high mass on Sundays. The rosary is recited in Latin before mass. A very holy and reverent Liturgy follows that will take about 2 hours. Love all of it!
The front doors were open so we walked in and quietly looked around.. Some beautiful statues of saints. Interior was quite lovely.. I believe they said it was built around 1760..
A great old church. A special place. Was my wife's home church, hosted our wedding, and the christening of our three children. Had the funerals for my father-in-law and most recently my mother-in-law. A beautiful building, even though the parish was founded in the later half of the 1700s, the church building was dedicated in 1844. Worth visiting. Also see the nearby Evangeline Oak.
This is a beautiful church and the third oldest Catholic Church in Louisiana which was built in the 1800s. The stations of the cross are huge and there is a large replica of the Lourdes grotto inside. The pews themselves are unique in that they are box press that can only be opened on one side. It is considered the mother church of the Cajuns.
Beautiful old Catholic church.
We went here to see the Evangeline statue. The front doors of the church were unlocked, so we went in.
There were many old statues of Catholic saints. Of special note were the boxed in pews. Apparently, back in the day, parishioners paid for the pews in advance so they knew they'd have a seat for mass.
This church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Love visiting this beautiful church
